It may seem odd, even a little creepy, that these fans, mainly women, spend so much time invested in a relationship between two living people who are not dating. Fanfiction about these two, and the fans who write and read it, is just one small facet of a larger theme that extends throughout all fandom: Slash fanfiction. Fanfiction (or fanfic) is a new form of literature in which the author writes using pre-existing situations, locals, and characters.
[---] Many fandoms, similar to this example of Supernatural, now use the internet to their advantage, using computers to photo-shop images of their characters, post art, stories, videos, and recorded "audiobook" versions of their fanfics. The internet has given fanfiction a giant boost, and it has increased its authors, readers, and popularity.
[---] In other words, slash takes platonic interpersonal relationships between men from the original text and interprets them with a homoerotic bent. In his seminal book Professor Henry Jenkins states that the term "Slash" appeared in the 1970s from Star Trek fans who postulated that Kirk and Spock might be closer than the series seemed to indicate.
[---] There are many opinions on slashfic and why women write it, from the simple '"women like to see men boinking, just like guys like porn with lesbians," to in-depth queries into the female psyche around what is romantic to women and what sort of metatext emerges from the whole of the genre as a societal message.
[---] Behavior that would be understood as platonic between females can be seen as romantic between male characters because of social norms. Sometimes women write about the accepted closeness females are allowed in relationships but depict it with male characters, grafting female experience onto males.
[---] Slash fiction allows the modern female to escape into a fictional world, while dealing with issues that are not so far from reality. Slash readers are attracted to a safe place to explore their sexuality, texts aimed at their circumstances, experiences and emotions, and the community dialogue surrounding those texts.
[---] Last summer the company that runs Livejournal, a hosting site for much of fandom, removed several highly regarded slashers for having posted content that could be construed as detrimental to minors. This branding of fanfiction, especially slash, and its authors created a huge controversy in the community. The world of slash is anonymous on the internet, however many members form strong friendships with each other through their stories, shared passion, and experiences. The cultural backlash of wider society threatens to destroy this safe haven through planting the seeds of doubt and fear.
[---] As Carol Pinchefsky quotes in her article about Harry Potter fanfiction, “‘Being a fan is like being in love,’ says Lynn Karlsson, a fanfic writer. ‘You just want to eat, sleep, breathe, and love these characters, and spending time with them is the most engaging thing that you think of.’”. These women have found a unique way to creatively use their passions to make their own world a better place.
[---] At Asylum Con '07, one brave girl spoke up to ask actor Jensen Ackles (remember him from the intro?) what he thought about fanfiction. As soon as the words left her lips the audience drew in a collective breath “Oh!” Someone had asked. Slash is the internets greatest, least-kept secret, even though it has so many members in online communities, to ask someone outside of fandom, especially an actor they write about, what he thinks of fanfiction was a big step. Jensen put a hand over his face and shook his head. The audience laughed and clapped at the simple action. Jensen: […] very, very crazy ideas [audience: laughter, clapping] ..and then sometimes very disturbing ideas, um, one of my favorites is, uh, Wincest.. [audience: really, really loud surprise, squealing/laughter, screaming] I-- I-- I only hope that my grandmother never sees it."

Fair enough, men kolla åtminstone videon i början. Det är ett fint stycke episk romans, och SPN!fandom är the greatest. Helt klart.
